Sunsphere Renovation
Visit Knoxville is pleased to announce completion of Phase I of The Sunsphere Renovation Plan, restoring the iconic structure's base to the original blue as designed by Community Tectonics for the 1982 World’s Fair. In that vision, the blue base supporting the golden glass sphere represented the sky below the sun – creating the visual for the Fair’s theme of Energy Turns the World.
Visit Knoxville, in collaboration with the City of Knoxville, the Public Building Authority, and Knox County, managed the repainting project with funds generated by the Sunsphere Fund. In 2024, Phase II will focus on constructing a Welcome Center on the third level, encouraging easier access to the beloved structure and ensuring its continued significance for future generations.
