Tennessee’s Civil War History: Knoxville Area Attractions

The Knoxville Campaign played a pivotal role in Union control of Tennessee, with fortifications and battle sites still visible today. Fort Dickerson, one of the best-preserved earthen forts from the Civil War, features stunning views of Knoxville and the Tennessee River, along with interpretive signs detailing its role in the city's defense. Nearby, High Ground Park provides a peaceful retreat with walking trails leading to the remnants of Fort Higley, another key Union fortification. Knoxville also played a role in the legacy of Admiral David Farragut, a Tennessee native and the first rear admiral of the U.S. Navy.
