Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness is a 1,000-acre outdoor playground just minutes from downtown, perfect for adventures year-round. Whether you’re into paddling calm waters, chasing adrenaline on mountain bike trails, or simply exploring nature with the family, you’ll find your perfect fit here. To make planning easy, we’ve crafted a few mini-itineraries tailored to different types of adventurers!

🌊 Paddler’s Paradise

Highlights: Mead’s Quarry Lake, SUP/Kayak Rentals, Tennessee River Put-ins

  • Morning: Start your day at Mead’s Quarry, where you can rent stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, or canoes from River Sports Outfitters (located seasonally onsite). Glide across calm waters surrounded by quarry cliffs—an Instagram-worthy start to the day. Pro-tip: This one is PERFECT for beginners or families with younger kids, as the water has no current in the quarry!
  • Afternoon: For more open water, there are several places to access the Tennessee River nearby. Suttree Landing Park (also has accessible put-ins!), Ijams Nature Center, and Island Home Park are just a few. Bring your own or rent from Knoxville Adventure Collective on the north side of the river. There’s a current here, but totally manageable; no rapids!
  • Pack List: Sunscreen, hat, refillable water bottle, water shoes.
  • Best Time: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid mid-day heat.
  • Post-Paddle Fuel: Head to SoKno Taco Cantina for tacos and a cold beer, or cool down with some boba tea from Angry Dumplings.

👨‍👩‍👧 Family Explorer

Highlights: Kid-Friendly Trails, Ijams Visitor Center, Nature Play

  • Morning: Kick off at the Ijams Visitor Center, where you can grab a map, use the restrooms, and get your bearings. Walk the River Boardwalk Trail for a scenic, easy stroll that is perfect for kids. Stroller pushers may want to consider the paved Will Skelton Greenway that runs through Ijams Nature Center.
  • Midday: Let the kids run wild at the Ijams Nature Playscape, where boulders, logs, and water features spark imagination. Pack a picnic to enjoy at the shaded tables.
  • Afternoon: If energy remains, try a short hike past Mead’s Quarry. The Imerys Trail to the Ross Marble Loop is an awe-inspiring sight that brings to life the marble quarrying past of the area.
  • Pack List: Snacks, water, extra clothes for messy play, binoculars for wildlife spotting.
  • Best Time: Late morning through early afternoon.
  • Post-Adventure Treat: Stop at Honeybee Coffee Co. for iced coffee and baked goods, or create the perfect pie at South Coast Pizza. South Coast is very kid-friendly, as it’s super casual and despite being on a somewhat busy thoroughfare (Sevier Ave.), the outdoor tables are fenced in so parents can actually relax!

🚵 Thrill Seeker

Highlights: Mountain Biking & Rock Climbing

  • Morning: Warm up at Baker Creek Preserve, home to some of the best mountain biking trails in the Southeast. Test your skills on Year-Round Get Down or, if you’re ready, take on the expert-only Devil’s Racetrack. Bike rentals are available from Knoxville Outdoor Tours, and bike repair can be found onsite at Bear Paw Bikes.
  • Afternoon: Switch gears and climb at Ijams Crag, Knoxville’s only outdoor climbing area, just minutes from downtown. The Ijams Crag features more than 30 routes with bolted routes and bolted anchors. Routes range in height from 30 to 60 feet and from 5.6 to 5.13 in difficulty. Climbers should use their own gear to top-rope routes, and only use fixed gear on anchors to lower off of routes.
  • Pack List: Hydration pack, helmet, gloves, climbing shoes, chalk bag.
  • Best Time: Early morning rides and shaded afternoon climbs.
  • Post-Thrill Refuel: Relax at Alliance Brewing Co. with a craft pint, or stick around the Baker Creek Preserve area for fresh American fare at 71 South.

🏰 History Buff’s Journey

Highlights: Civil War Sites, Scenic Overlooks, Stories of Knoxville’s Past

  • Morning: Begin at Fort Dickerson Park, one of the best-preserved Civil War earthen forts in the country. A short walk takes you to overlooks of downtown and the river, with interpretive signs sharing Knoxville’s Civil War role. Easily extend your visit here with over 4 miles of trails. Keep trekking to the next spot or stop along the way at Augusta Quarry for a swim or paddle.
  • Midday: Head to High Ground Park, a peaceful spot with trails weaving through preserved earthworks of historic Fort Higley. Along the way, you’ll find storytelling panels about soldiers’ lives and battles fought here. This stroll is another great one for for families, as stroller pushers will enjoy the paved path and older kids can read and understand the historic information. Iconic red Adirondack chairs await for a relaxing rest at the end of this trail before you turn back.
  • Afternoon: Just down the street from High Ground Park, you’ll find an unmarked trailhead to the River Bluff Wildlife Area, where history meets beauty. You’ll pass a pond with loafing turtles and maybe a water bird or two. Once a strategic lookout point, it now rewards you with sweeping views of the Tennessee River and downtown skyline. You won’t believe you’re just minutes from downtown – it’s the epitome of “urban wilderness!”
  • Pack List: Comfortable walking shoes, water, a hat, and a curiosity for local history.
  • Best Time: Morning or early evening when the trails are quiet and the light is ideal for photos.
  • Post-Adventure Bite: Reflect on your explorations at Kern’s Food Hall – lots of choices for the whole group!

🌿 Relax & Recharge

Highlights: Hammocking, Birdwatching, Scenic Strolls

  • Morning: Start with a leisurely walk along the Will Skelton Greenway, which winds along the Tennessee River and connects to Ijams. It’s flat, shaded, and peaceful—ideal for birdwatching or simply taking in the views. A particularly rewarding spot you’ll find is the confluence of the Holston and French Broad Rivers to form the Tennessee River.
  • Midday: Bring a hammock or blanket and settle into a shady spot near Mead’s Quarry or along the river at Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area. Pack a book or journal for a slow afternoon. Ijams Nature Center has plenty of open lawn space to spread out for the perfect picnic. If you’d like some playground with the picnic, take the party over to Suttree Landing Park for the best of both worlds!
  • Afternoon: Stroll through the Sunflower Fields at Forks of the River (blooming every other summer, typically July) or enjoy the wildflower displays along the trails in spring. Don’t forget your camera for the seasonal blooms and wildlife sightings.
  • Pack List: Hammock or picnic blanket, journal or book, camera, light snacks.
  • Best Time: Mid-morning through golden hour for cooler temps and beautiful light.
  • Post-Adventure Wind-Down: Grab a burger at Sevier Ave. Burger Co. or linger over a glass of beer at Printshop Brewing Co. to end your day on a relaxed note.
