Knoxville has a thriving creative scene, we're known as "The Maker City" and we invite visitors not just to observe art, but to make it themselves. Whether you’re a hands-on traveler, a casual doodler, or someone chasing inspiration, Knoxville offers plenty of places to tap into your creative side.

Here’s your guide to the most inspiring spots to create while visiting Knoxville!

Start with immersive art studios

Knoxville Arts Center: If you want a low-pressure, welcoming place to make something meaningful, this is a great first stop. Visitors can book one-off sessions or short classes in painting, drawing, or mixed media. What makes it special is the personalized approach—classes are built around what you want to create, not a rigid lesson plan. It’s ideal if you’re traveling solo or looking for a mindful, creative break during your trip.

Visualize Art Studio: This bright, modern studio offers structured classes in stained glass for all skill levels. You'll also find them at pop up classes all around town.

Mighty Mud: For something tactile, try clay. This artist-run ceramics space offers workshops, studio access, and a gallery—all under one roof. It’s a fun, slightly messy way to create something uniquely Knoxville.

Liza Moz Pottery: Don't want to get messy? Paint a piece instead! This studio in West Knoxville allows you to choose from a wide selection of "blank slate" options for you to paint any way you prefer, leaving you with a finished glaze piece.

Knoxville Makerspace: If your creativity leans more toward innovation than paintbrushes, this is your playground. With tools, tech, and hands-on activities, it blends art, science, and DIY experimentation.

Pretentious Glass: Glassblowing is an incredibly difficult craft, but the experts here will guide you to create your own ornament, pumpkin, or other pieces throughout the seasons. Check their calendar for current offerings.

Feed your creative soul with these events and attractions

First Friday ArtWalk: On the first Friday of every month, downtown transforms into a walkable celebration of creativity. Galleries, studios, shops, and even restaurants open their doors for art exhibits, live music, and performances. It’s one of the easiest (and most fun) ways for visitors to experience Knoxville’s creative energy—no planning required, just wander and explore.

Knoxville Museum of Art: A FREE museum in the heart of downtown, dedicated to art inspired by and artists from East Tennessee. Check their calendar for drop-in model drawings and other classes and workshops.

Historic Westwood: One of Knoxville's seven Historic House Museums, this was once the home of a Knoxville artist, Adelia Armstrong Lutz. Marvel at her studio inside this 1890 Richardsonian Romanesque mansion just east of downtown.

Pop-Up Classes: There are pop-up classes all over town, from Gumption Watercolors (often at Pretentious Beer), Sightseers Drawing Club presented by the Museum of Infinite Outcomes (third Thursdays at the Knoxville Botanical Garden & Arboretum), and more.

Hope these ideas help you celebrate National Creativity Day (May 30) EVERY day!
