If you’re looking for a fun and totally unique way to explore Knoxville, we’ve got just the thing: the Tennessee RiverLine. It’s a 652-mile playground for paddlers, boaters, bikers, hikers, and anyone who just loves being outside.

And guess what? It all starts right here in Knoxville.

That’s right—Knoxville is the official trailhead of the Tennessee RiverLine. Think of it kind of like the Appalachian Trail, but instead of hiking boots, you’ve got a paddle (or maybe a bike). You can head out for an hour, a day, a weekend—or go all in and try a full “thru-paddle” (yep, that’s a thing).

A Perfect Half-Day on the Water (with snacks, obviously)

Start the day with brunch at Eggspectation at Kerns Food Hall. It’s got all the classics—think eggs benny, pancakes, fancy coffee—but with a little extra flair.

Once you’re fueled up, head over to Holston River Park, where you can launch your kayak or paddleboard. This stretch of the river is mellow and scenic, perfect for beginners or anyone looking to take it easy. Paddle downstream to Suttree’s Landing Park, a beautiful spot right in the city with great views and a relaxed vibe.

After you’ve worked up an appetite (again), swing by Sugar Queen Creamery in South Knoxville. Their local, small-batch ice cream is the real deal—treat yourself, you earned it. They even have ice cream flights so you can get several scoops and flavors to savor all the goodness!

Got More Time? Go Big with This Full-Day River + Trail Adventure

If you’ve got a full day to play, we’ve got you covered. Start again at Holston River Park, but this time, you’re paddling a little farther. Your first stop? Ijams River Landing, Knoxville’s first ADA accessible dock.

Hop out and explore the trails at Ijams Nature Center—a local favorite with beautiful hikes, cool rock formations, and even a ropes course if you’re feeling adventurous.

Then it’s back on the water for a chill float down to Calhoun’s on the River for dinner where you can paddle up to the dock right at the restaurant. Grab a table on the patio and enjoy that riverside breeze with your burger or BBQ.

Still not ready to call it a day? Knoxville Adventure Collective rents bikes just a short walk from Calhoun’s. Take a spin along the Volunteer Landing greenway and soak up the sunset over the river.

Wanna Explore Even More? We’ve Got 652 Miles of River to Share

Yep, you read that right—652 miles of river to paddle, explore, and fall in love with. The trips in Knoxville are just the beginning. The Tennessee RiverLine winds its way through four states, dozens of parks, wildlife refuges, and so many amazing river communities – both big and small.

Need help planning your adventure? The Plan Your Journey tool on the RiverLine website has maps, launch sites, trip ideas, and everything you need to hit the water (or the trail).

More Than a River

The Tennessee RiverLine isn’t just about paddling. It’s about the whole experience—riverfront parks, trails, towns, and public lands that make this part of the world so special. That’s why spots like Ijams are part of the story. Whether you're on the water or nearby, you're still on the RiverLine.
