Knoxville, Tennessee, is calling your name for the perfect girls' weekend getaway! Whether you're seeking fun outdoors, amazing food, or vibrant nightlife— this city has it all. From cozy coffee shops to scenic hikes, local breweries to chic boutiques, Knoxville promises an unforgettable trip. Here’s how to make the most of your getaway:
Coffee Stops: Start Your Day Right
What better way to kick off your girls' weekend than with a cup of artisan coffee and delicious baked goods? Start your day at Wild Love Bakehouse, where the croissants are to die for, and the coffee is perfection. Dubbed “Best Bakery in America” by AFAR Magazine just two years after opening, Wild Love’s cozy vibe and delicious treats make it a go-to spot.
Not in the mood for sweets? Head over to Remedy Coffee, right next to Paysan Bread & Bagels, where you can grab a cup of expertly brewed coffee and a variety of freshly baked bagels. It’s the perfect stop to fuel up for a day of East Tennessee adventure.
Outdoor Fun: Explore Knoxville’s Beauty
If you and your friends want to take in some fresh air and enjoy Knoxville’s accessible outdoors, you can’t miss Ijams Nature Center. Just 10 minutes from downtown, Ijams offers stunning trails along the Tennessee River, where you can immerse yourself in nature. In the warmer months, you can rent paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes at the Mead’s Quarry for the perfect mix of outdoor fun and relaxation.
If you like the sound of waterway exploration, there’s also the Knoxville Adventure Collective, where you can paddle board on the Tennessee River, try out a yoga class, or rent mountain bikes to take on scenic trails in the area. It’s the ultimate spot for an adventurous day out with your friends!
Plan a peaceful picnic and BYOW - the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum offers lovely shaded spots to spread out and relax amongst the flowers. Pack some snacks and catch up, hidden away from the hustle and bustle.
For more scenery but from a different perspective try a river cruise with the Volunteer Princess, a yacht that offers sightseeing, lunch and dinner options, and themed cruises. For a view of the city from above, visit the iconic Sunsphere for panoramic vistas stretching from downtown to the Smoky Mountains.
Indoor Adventures: Arts & Culture, History, and Shopping
If the weather isn’t cooperating or your trip falls during the cooler Tennessee months, don’t fret —Knoxville has plenty of indoor activities to keep your itinerary exciting. Start at the Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA), featuring regional and contemporary works, including pieces by women artists like Catherine Wiley.
For history lovers, Knoxville’s Historic House Museums provide a glimpse into the city's past. Historic Westwood, once home to artist Adelia Armstrong Lutz, showcases her work, while the Mabry-Hazen House tells the fascinating (and scandalous!) story of Evelyn Hazen and her infamous breach of promise trial (the short version is she sued her former lover, claiming he seduced her, leading to a 15-year engagement that never resulted in a wedding. She considered murdering him, but decided to sue him instead! Trust us, you’ll want to take a tour to learn more!).
East Tennessee also played a key role in women’s suffrage—a stop at the East Tennessee History Center will tell you the tale of a young representative who voted in favor of suffrage thanks to a heartfelt letter from his mother. The short version is Febb Burn told young Harry Burn to “be a good boy” and vote for ratification of the 19th Amendment! You’ll see their memorial statue with portions of that iconic letter behind the history center.
Sports fans will enjoy the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the only facility in the world dedicated to all levels of the sport of women’s basketball.
If shopping is on your agenda, you can find a variety of boutiques, vintage stores, and locally owned shops throughout the city, offering things from handcrafted jewelry and home decor to University of Tennessee apparel and unique gifts. Whether you’re browsing Market Square, exploring the Old City, or venturing into Bearden and beyond, Knoxville’s shopping has something for every style. The Visit Knoxville Visitors Center is a must-visit for souvenirs, featuring a collection of locally crafted goods and local artwork from over 80 talented makers.
From art and history to shopping and sports, Knoxville’s indoor attractions ensure a memorable visit—rain or shine.
