🚗 Three Trails, One City: "Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways" by starting in Knoxville
Knoxville is a destination in its own right, but it's also a trailhead to three of Tennessee’s most fascinating driving experiences. The Rocky Top Trail, White Lightning Trail, and Top Secret Trail all pass through the city, each offering a completely different lens on East Tennessee: music and mountains, moonshine and backroads, science and secrecy.
Think of Knoxville as your starting point—the place where these stories begin before unfolding across the region!
🎶 Rocky Top Trail: Music, Mountains & Appalachian Soul
The Rocky Top Trail starts in Knoxville and stretches toward the foothills of the Smokies, blending Appalachian culture, music heritage, and outdoor adventure into one unforgettable drive.
📍 Knoxville highlights
- Founded in 1786, Knoxville is today referred to as “a nature-loving-adventure-seeking-artsy-kinda town.” Begin at the Visit Knoxville Visitors Center, which has live music at noon most days. Discover vibrant downtown districts such as Market Square and the Old City for restaurants, breweries, shopping, murals and the historic Tennessee Theatre. Visit World’s Fair Park and head up to the 4th Floor Observation Deck in the Sunsphere for a 360-degree view of downtown overlooking the Knoxville Museum of Art.
- Explore historic homes including Marble Springs, the home of Tennessee’s first governor John Sevier, which hosts Revolutionary War reenactments. Learn about the pioneer era at James White’s Fort, a re-creation of the log house built by the Revolutionary War veteran. Don’t miss frontier hero David Crockett’s first rifle at the East Tennessee History Center.
- For outdoor fun, there’s Ijams Nature Center, a 300-acre wildlife sanctuary and environmental learning center, and Knoxville's Urban Wilderness, which runs through 1,000 forested acres along downtown’s south waterfront. There’s no question you’re in Big Orange Country here, with University of Tennessee sites such as Neyland Stadium, Thompson Boling Arena and Pat Summitt Plaza often filled with Vols fans singing along to “Rocky Top,” one of UT’s best-known traditions.
From here, the trail quickly transitions into scenic countryside and mountain views.
🌄 Beyond Knoxville (briefly…)
As you continue, you’ll move into Maryville, Townsend, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with opportunities for wildflower hikes, scenic overlooks, and cultural stops tied to Appalachian history.
This trail is the most visually stunning of the three—perfect for travelers chasing landscapes and classic East Tennessee charm.
🥃 White Lightning Trail: Moonshine, Legends & Backroads
If Rocky Top is about beauty, the White Lightning Trail is about storytelling—specifically, the rebellious, fast-driving, bootlegging kind.
Named after illegal moonshine (“white lightning”), this route follows the same twisting roads used by Prohibition-era runners—roads that ultimately helped inspire stock car racing.

Located on the Holston River, Knoxville’s scenic vistas are a perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures at Ijams Nature Center, Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness and treetop fun at Navitat. Now long past Prohibition, Knoxville features more than two dozen craft breweries, taprooms and wineries across the city. Check out the self-guided Knoxville Ale Trail or check out local favorites like Pretentious Beer Co., which also features live glass-blowing demos. Keep in the spirit of the trail with a Thunder Road burger at Litton’s or sample the shopping and many downtown dining options of Market Square and the Old City.
These stops ground the trail in Knoxville’s deeper past before you head into more rural terrain.
🛣️ Beyond Knoxville (briefly…)
Outside the city, the trail winds through Clinton, Norris, and Cumberland Gap–adjacent areas, with stops like Norris Dam, Appalachian museums, and scenic byways.
You’ll encounter:
-
Historic town squares
-
Arts and crafts communities
-
Mountain overlooks and winding “Thunder Road” curves
This is the trail for travelers who love legends, folklore, and a little outlaw energy.
🔬 Top Secret Trail: Science, Secrecy & Hidden History
The Top Secret Trail might be the most unexpected of the three. It’s built around one of the most fascinating chapters in American history: the Manhattan Project.
Named for nearby Oak Ridge (once a classified “Secret City”), this route combines WWII intrigue, science, and outdoor beauty.
📍 Knoxville highlights
-
Experience frontier life at James White's Fort to see where Knoxville began in 1786 on the banks of the Tennessee River. Nearby, Blount Mansion, known as the “Birthplace of Tennessee,” was home to William Blount, who transitioned the Southwest Territory into the nation’s 16th state. The 1858 Italianate Mabry-Hazen House showcases one of the country’s largest family collections with more than 2,000 original artifacts on display. Next door, Alex Haley Heritage Square honors the Pulitzer prize-winning author of Roots.
-
Just a mile away, Old City and Market Square feature restaurants, coffee shops, nightlife, distilleries and unique shopping. The Sunsphere in World’s Fair Park is a downtown landmark. Check out the views from the observation deck before heading down to see the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial and enjoy entertainment options such as the Tennessee Amphitheater and Knoxville Museum of Art.
-
The 1982 World’s Fair site is the gateway to the University of Tennessee. In addition to sporting events at Neyland Stadium and Thompson-Boling Arena, Circle Park on campus is home to the iconic Torchbearer Statue and McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture. On the edge of campus, Volunteer Landing is a linear park along the river. Walkers, runners and cyclists enjoy Neyland Greenway, while kids love the playground and splash pads.
While the most famous “secret” sites lie just outside Knoxville, the city itself anchors the journey and provides context before you dive deeper into the story.
🧪 Beyond Knoxville (briefly…)
From Knoxville, the trail expands into Oak Ridge’s Manhattan Project sites, State parks and lakes across the Cumberland Plateau, Small towns with surprising ties to science, industry, and Appalachian culture.
You’ll move from nuclear history to scenic wilderness in a single drive—making this trail feel both educational and exploratory.
🧭 Why Knoxville Is the Perfect Starting Point

You can experience music, history, and food before hitting the road
-
Each trail radiates outward into a completely different version of Tennessee
