KNOXVILLE, TN – The Knoxville Transportation Authority (KTA) has formally approved Knoxville Area Transit’s (KAT) proposal to implement a zero-fare pilot program on Route 1: Downtown Connector, effective November 23, 2025. The decision was made during the KTA board meeting held on Thursday, November 20, following a public hearing to gather input from community members.
KAT is pleased to announce the arrival of this zero-fare program in collaboration with Visit Knoxville to enhance downtown mobility and encourage public transit use. Route 1: The Downtown Connector connects key destinations in downtown Knoxville, including the Old City, Covenant Health Park, Market Square, and Main Street.
“The approval of the zero-fare pilot program for Route 1 has a meaningful impact on downtown Knoxville,” said Isaac Thorne, Executive Director. “Passengers will be able to utilize the Downtown Connector service at no cost, increasing access to jobs, services, and businesses.”
KAT invites everyone to try the Downtown Connector. This route utilizes 15-minute service, creating frequent service around the city center.
