Marble Quarries

Region: Downtown
2531 Asbury Road
Knoxville, TN 37914

Visible near here is one of several of the area's marble quarries. Pink Tennessee marble was to become so popular among architects of major buildings in Washington, New York, and other cities that Knoxville developed a reputation as "The Marble City." Marble was quarried in all directions of town, but this area became especially known for it.

North and east of Asbury is the community of Marbledale, named by the early 1870s in recognition of the marble industry's importance to the local economy.
