Frozen Head State Park Hiking Trails

964 Flat Fork Road | Wartburg, TN 37887
Wartburg, TN 37887
Region: Regional

Showcasing the Cumberland Mountains, Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area is a premier place to explore. There are giant sandstone rock formations to wind around, bluffs to scramble up, creeks to rock-hop, and plenty of waterfalls. On a clear day, great views of the valleys below can be seen from the Chimney Tops Trail. The fire tower presents a 360-degree panorama of the Cumberland Plateau, Tennessee Ridge & Valley and the Great Smoky Mountains. This mountainous terrain varies from an elevation of 1,340 feet to over 3,000 feet with 14 mountain peaks. Frozen Head's elevation of 3,324 feet, makes it one of the highest peaks in Tennessee west of the Great Smoky Mountains. Seasonal hiking presents varied highlights. Winter hikes may afford you the view that gives Frozen Head it's name as the mountain peaks are often capped with snow or ice even when the lower valleys remain unadorned. Springtime boasts colorful wildflower displays that rival those of the Smokies. In summertime, the park is dressed in lush vegetation with a shady canopy that invites splashing and wading in the cooling waters of Flat Fork Creek. Fall turns the forest into a kaleidoscope of color displays and offers views through the unclothed forest.

Trails: Trails range from easy to strenuous, from wide old roadbeds to tighter singletrack. There are historic trails that pass by old homesteads and by remnants from the CCC days when the Civilian Conservation Corps was developing the park. Over 80 miles of trails are open to hikers and trail runners. Each of the 20 trails are color blazed and most trails inter-loop giving a choice of 7 loops ranging from 0.6 mile to 15 miles round-trip with portions of the Cumberland Trail passing through.
