Fort Higley is an historical landmark located in High Ground Park in South Knoxville. Fort Higley was constructed in 1863 by Union forces in preparation for the battle to protect the high ground south of the Tennessee River from Confederate siege. During the Siege of Knoxville and the Battle of Fort Sanders, this seven-acre parcel served as the western anchor of the Federal line, protecting the city from Confederate troops stationed on Cherokee Heights.
