Black Mountain

Black Mountain | Crab Orchard, TN 37723
Crab Orchard, TN 37723
Region: Regional

Before the development of the Obed in the 1990's, Black Mountain was a hot spot for Knoxville climbers. Here, you will find a maze of small cliff-line, up to 40 feet tall, and scattered boulders linked by a winding trail system that leads to some nice views. Nestled along the Cumberland Trail, the rock here is a conglomerate sandstone-small cobble that can be hard on the hands, but has amazing friction. While many of the classic routes were originally bolted lines, most of the bolts have been removed. Because of this, Black Mountain has become quite popular for top-roping and is often used by boy scout troops. Many of the natural anchors are far from the cliff edge, so 50' static lines are recommended over webbing for setting up climbs. It is also helpful to have a rack of traditional gear to supplement natural anchors (but not completely necessary). Black Mountain has become a popular bouldering destination. Climbers will find a large diversity of interesting features, mostly flat landings and easy access from the parking lot.
