The Fight to Win the Vote – Author Event

Award-winning journalist and author Elaine Weiss will introduce her latest non-fiction work at the East Tennessee History Center on Thursday, March 8, 2018, 7 p.m. The Woman’s Hour is especially relevant to Tennesseans as it documents the final battle in the war to win women the right to vote that was fought right here in The Volunteer State.

Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero will introduce Weiss at the event. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased online at the Friends of the Knox County Public Library’s website (knoxfriends.org) or in person at Union Ave Books or at the Friends @ Rothrock Used Book Shop just inside Lawson McGhee Library. Ticket holders may purchase copies of The Woman’s Hour at the event at a discount of 10%. Weiss will sign copies after she speaks.

Many of us have forgotten it took 70 years for women to obtain the right to vote, and far fewer know it came down to a nail-biting six-week battle in Tennessee. The Woman’s Hour depicts that battle in which lesser known suffragettes such as Carrie Chapman Catt, Sue Shelton White and Anne Dallas Dudley played pivotal roles.

Weiss’ first book, Fruits of Victory: The Woman’s Land Army in the Great War, was excerpted in Smithsonian Magazine online and featured on C-Span and public radio stations nationwide. Additionally, her by-line has appeared in The Atlantic, Harper’s, New York Times, Boston Globe and Philadelphia Inquirer. She has also been a frequent correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor.

This author event is sponsored by Friends of the Knox County Public Library, the Knox County Public Library, Union Ave Books, the East Tennessee Historical Society, and WUOT.
