Join Church Street United Methodist Church in downtown Knoxville this July 11, 18, 25, and August 1 at 7 pm for its 4th Annual Summer Lecture Series. The Education Committee is honored to present the following lecturers in 2021, free and open to the public in person in the Parish Hall or via webinar at http://tinyurl.com/lectures21

VALERIE COOPER - Sunday, July 11, 7 pm
Dr. Cooper’s forthcoming book Segregated Sundays evaluates the successes and failures of the racial reconciliation efforts of Christian congregations and ministries from the 1990s to the present. She is Associate Professor of Religion and Society and Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School. She will present by webinar.

ALEX THOMPSON - Sunday, July 18, 7 pm
Rev. Dr. Alex Thompson will present “Recognizing Jesus: The Appearances of the Risen Christ in the Synoptic Gospels” on July 18. He is Professor of Religion at Tennessee Wesleyan University and serves as pastor at Niota and Cedar Springs UMC. This will be an in-person and online hybrid event.

JOSEPH REIFF - Sunday, July 25, 7 pm
Dr. Joseph Reiff will share a presentation titled, “The Eyes of Jesus Were Upon Her: The Advent of Clergy Women in Mississippi Methodism.” The story explores the remarkable transformation of a previously all-male world of ordained clergy in early 20th century Mississippi to the later part of the century when more than 50 women were serving as ministers in some capacity in United Methodism (with 44 fully ordained). He is Professor Emeritus of Emory & Henry College. This will be an in-person and online hybrid event.

RACHELLE SCOTT - Sunday, August 1, 7 pm
Dr. Rachelle Scott’s interests and research focus on Buddhism and contemporary culture. She is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Additional details forthcoming.
