Chang Tan specializes in Chinese and East Asian art in the 20th and 21st centuries. Her research interests include global modernism and avant-gardism, public and socially engaged art, art and ecocriticism, and the history of collecting and exhibiting Asian and Asian American art in the United States. She has published in Art Journal, World Art, Third Text, among others. Her upcoming monograph studies Chinese artists' engagement with the marginalized sectors of the public. Her current research, supported by the Chiang-Ching Kuo Foundation and the Humanities Institute, studies early studio photographic practices in China and the Chinese diaspora. Dr. Tan is the Assistant Professor of Art History and Asian Studies at Penn State.
