Knoxville, TN – Fans of the national pastime and lovers of history are invited to witness Knoxville’s two vintage base ball clubs in action at noon and 2:30 p.m., this Saturday, April 23, 2016, at historic Ramsey House, 2614 Thorngrove Pike, Knoxville, TN 37914. The first game will feature the Knoxville Holstons playing the Highland Rim Distillers of Middle Tennessee. The second match pits the Emmett Machinists of Knoxville against the Nashville Maroons. Ballists from each club will wear period-appropriate attire and follow the rules and customs of the Civil War-era, including playing without a glove. The historic fun is free, so families are encouraged to come on out to Ramsey House, spread a blanket, and root on the ballists during the match!
“The Emmett Machinists are looking forward to a hearty, skillful match against the Nashville Maroons,” says Jeremy “Haymaker” Hubbs, co-captain of the Emmett Machinists (1-0). “The Machinists are ready to take the grounds of Ramsey House with vim and vigor, as we aim to put on a splendid showing for the good people of Knoxville.”
“In our first two seasons at Ramsey House, we have been humbled by the Knoxville community and its support of vintage base ball,” adds Ken “Molasses” Mayes, co-captain of the Knoxville Holstons (0-1). “It is our hope that even more families come out to our matches this season and learn about Knoxville’s early base ball teams, which we try to re-create and honor through our spirited play.”
Fans who would like to arrive at Ramsey House in true vintage style should check out the Vintage Base Ball Express, a special rail excursion offered by the Three Rivers Rambler. Information and ticketing options are available at www.threeriversrambler.com.
