Knoxville Children’s Theatre will present eleven week-long summer camps, which are intensive versions of our popular school-year creative dramatics classes. Camps begin on June 16, and the camp period will conclude on July 25. The fee for each camp is $230.
June 16-20 - 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Acting III: Acting For Musical Theatre Ages 14 – 17 Students in this Intensive Session will develop their acting skills as a musical theatre performer. This will include good, healthy singing and vocal warm-up, learning to use the voice as an instrument for developing character and then how to execute a song in that same character. Students will learn how to appropriately make appropriate musical transitions on stage and how to use the music as a tool for understanding character, mood, etc. The class will also touch on the skill of singing and blending as a small ensemble, and it incorporates the Alexander technique and improvisational work with Performing Power. KCT’s Acting I class or some previous acting or stage experience recommended.
June 16-20 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Acting II: Intermediate Acting Ages 12-16 This class is designed to develop the confidence and creativity of the intermediate level actor. Students will study correct vocal projection, stage movement, character development, and objective based acting. The class begins with group exercises and will also include opportunities for individual development and partner work. The class concludes with a brief showcase of scene work. July 21 – 25: 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM: Thespians In Training for ages 4 - 5 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Understanding “The Method” for ages 12 – 18 will be cast in an extended scene from one of Shakespeare’s plays and will produce the work for a public showcase. The course will include an introduction to scansion as well as instruction in basic methods of character and text.
July 7 – 11 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Acting I: Beginning Acting – Ages 8-11, KCT staff members have designed this class to channel the incredible energy of this age group into different characters and theatrical creations. Each class will begin with an introductory concept or skill of the theatre and acting for the stage. Students will practice through group acting games, performance activities, and beginning scene study and character development. This class is designed for students with little to no theatre experience who are interested in exploring the art of acting.
July 7 – 11 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Creative Movement for the Stage This class is designed to develop the confidence and creativity of the intermediate level actor. July 14 – 18 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Page to Stage Ages 6 & 7 This class draws on the high-energy and creativity of this age group in order to introduce our youngest thespians to the basic concepts of theatre. Students will learn about the theatrical elements of plot, setting, theme, and character through the medium of storytelling. Each day students will focus on a particular element through show and tell, a craft, group story time, and beginning theatre games. The class will culminate in a group retelling of a classic fairytale. 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

July 21 – 25 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. Thespians in Training, Ages 4-5 A bridge to our “Page to Stage” class and future audition opportunities, this class introduces young thespians to the craft of theatre. The class focuses on harnessing the natural curiosity and wonder of this age group as a means of building confidence onstage and encouraging an early interest in theatre. In addition to acting exposure, students will be introduced to the various elements of theatre, including costumes, props, and set. Games, story time, and crafts are the main components of this class, all of which focus on a weekly theme. The final showcase includes a group presentation of a popular children’s book, such as Eric Carle’s “The Hungry Caterpillar,” along with a “mini-class,” in which parents and family are invited to join students and experience what they have learned first-hand! No reading ability or prior experience is required.
July 21 – 25 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Acting III: Understanding the Method, Ages 12-18 This is an advanced performance-centered, scene study class for actors with significant experience and/or prior training. As with some of KCT’s beginning and intermediate classes, students will continue the study and use of fundamental principles of the Stanislavsky system in a more systematic fashion and with more advanced texts and complex characters. The class also introduces acting principles based on physical action and includes work on the use of props as an expression of character.
